Although there is a “strict Consilience taboo against contact with Alternates”, Charmaine and Stan cannot help imagining alternative lives with alternative partners and are so tantalised by the possibilities that they pursue them to devastating effect. Everyone must live two lives: one month they have a home and job but the next they must live in a prison, swapping with their “Alternates”. ![]() Here is a story showing what desperation does to the human heart. ![]() Having barely read the terms and conditions, the couple sign the binding “commitment papers” and relocate to the town of Consilience, “because Charmaine has her heart set on it”.
